A global, fiber manufacturing client was rapidly growing. They had a productive Inside Sales Team and had recently hired new employees to fill Outside Sales roles as well. As the workforce grew, the awareness of a problem also grew. All employees had unrestricted access to company data, giving them the ability to read, write, and delete at their own discretion. Senior leadership recognized this data exposure as very risky. They knew they could not be so restrictive as to hinder productivity; but at the same time, they felt it was critical to protect the data they had worked hard to build.
Utilizing the client’s existing CRM system, Alternetics implemented a role-based security model that allows users access to data needed; yet, the model restricts access to data not relevant to their job performance. In addition to limiting data access, we modified the rules governing what each employee could actually do with the data. By limiting the delete capabilities to only a handful of trusted employees, our client can avoid a potentially- catastrophic loss of data due to either accidental or malicious deletion. To further secure the data, now only a select one or two individuals have the ability to download or export from the system. This helps prevent our client’s database from finding it’s way to the competition at the hands of a saboteur.
The new role-based, data security model provides peace of mind for the senior leadership team knowing that measures are now in place to protect against a potentially-catastrophic loss of data. Since employees had no need to access the now-restricted data, there has been no adverse effect on employee productivity
